Unsecured loans, often known as personal loans are available to anyone whether your a homeowner or tenant.

With this type of loan the person taking it out is personally liable for the debt this poses an increased risk to the lenders and as such often leads to higher interest rates than secured loans or re mortgages as well as shorter lending periods.

The maximum that can be borrowed with an unsecured loan is £25,000 and typically a maximum of 10 years to repay the loan.

With unsecured loans there can be flexible payment terms such as lump sum payments or over payments which could allow you to bring the loan down quicker than first agreed.

Failure to pay an unsecured loan can result in an adverse credit rating and in extreme cases it can risk your property if you are a homeowner but not if you are a tenant.

If you are consolidating debt with an unsecured loan then it is really important to remember that ideally you want to consolidate the majority if not all of your debt into the loan and then close the accounts otherwise you may continue to struggle with debt or ramp up more debt as well as having a loan to pay back.

Its important to shop around for unsecured loans to make sure you are getting the best deal to ensure you effectively work towards a debt free future.
